Country Selection

Country Selection

With so many study abroad program types and destinations available to you, and the long check list of tasks you need to complete before actually heading overseas, it can be difficult to decide where to start. Get yourself organized with these five steps that will help you plan ahead for your time abroad.

  • 1.Decide if study abroad is right for you Sure studying abroad sounds awesome, but is it a good fit for you? First, ask yourself a few questions:
    • Do I like traveling to unfamiliar places?
    • Am I comfortable being away from family and friends for an extend period of time?
    • Would I enjoy exploring a new culture?
    • Will I use study abroad to help shape me academically, professionally and/or personally?
  • If you answer "yes" to most or all of the questions, study abroad is probably a great choice for you. If you answer "no" to a lot of the questions, it might be time to do more honest soul searching before you decide. The reality is, studying abroad is a unique, adventurous opportunity to try something new and grow as both a student and a person, and it also comes with some challenges such as being out of your comfort zone and away from family and friends.
  • 2. Decide where and when to study abroad There are so many destinations to choose from when deciding where you want to study abroad that it can often be an overwhelming choice. It might be best if you first narrow down the type of location that interests you the most, and then make your decision. For example:
    • Would you prefer to study abroad in a rural or urban setting?
    • Do you want to be in an English-speaking area or somewhere where you need to speak a foreign language?
    • Is it important to you that you be centrally located to spend time on weekends traveling to nearby cities?
Based on your answers, you probably have a good idea about the qualities you want in your study abroad destination. Now it's just a matter of finding it! To help you find your perfect destination, you can browse by country, browse by city, consider different program options or follow student bloggers to see what it's like to live in that location. Next, it's time to decide when you want to study abroad in your said location. Typically, it's best to decide when you plan to go abroad at least nine months to one year ahead of time, if not more. Many study abroad programs require applicants to apply at least six months before the program begins, so having at least nine months gives you time to research, find and apply to a program(s) at your leisure.
  • 3. Find study abroad programs Now that you have decided where and when you want to study abroad, it's time to find a program. From summer study abroad trips to semester-long and full academic year programs, there are several types of programs to choose from as you decide which is best for you. As you research your options, it's important to talk directly with the program(s) of interest to learn more about what they offer, at what cost, and which amenities are or aren't included such as airport pick-up, onsite orientation, housing, etc. Learn more about the study abroad application.
  • 4. Talk to your support system Meet with your academic advisor to ensure you can stay on track to graduate on time, plan the coursework you need to take before you go abroad, the coursework you should save and take while abroad and the coursework that you will need to take after you return.
  • Talk with your parents about why, when and where you want to study abroad. Deciding to study abroad is often a family decision, and having an open conversation with them can help both you and them plan the best study abroad trip for you as possible. It's important to come to the conversation prepared with your points, and be ready with answers to their questions.

Course Selection

Course Selection

Students preparing to study abroad often ask about programs that fit with their major. While this is a relevant aspect of the planning process, most Lesley students enroll in free elective and general education courses abroad, rather than courses to fulfill major requirements. At the same time, it is entirely possible to take major requirements. Some students even complete internships during their semester abroad. As advised in the quote box below, it's important to develop a plan with your academic adviser to determine which semester and what type of coursework abroad you might pursue. The Study Abroad Office will then work with you find a program that fits your interests. Even though you might end up taking general education and free electives while abroad, the information on the links below is organized by major, to give you an idea of specific programs that are strong in your major as well as destinations that students from your major have chosen in recent years.

SOP Assistance

SOP Assistance

Statement of Purpose abbreviated as SOP, itself describes its importance in the selection procedure during admissions. SOP as the name implies has to describe your purpose of selecting this college/university, your background details and most important your ambitions. SOPs or college admission essays are a way to describe yourself or explain your views and opinions to the admission committee sitting miles away from you. These SOPs increases your chances of getting selected even if your admission test score (i.e., SAT/GMAT/GRE) is only average. It builds up your personality in front of the people who do not know you in person. If the SOPs describe you exactly the way you are, they increase your chances of admission. We at SAP will help you understand the importance of SOPs and will also guide and help you in writing SOPs. Do you have any tips on writing a Statement of Purpose? Below are some tips for writing a Statement of Purpose that would help you to some extent: There are many samples of college admission essay / statement of purpose on the internet. Read a couple of them to get an idea of what a good Essay / SOP may look like. If your topic is "tell me about yourself", don't forget to mention your important educational and professional experience, but remember not all experiences are worth enough to be mentioned on your essay. Only mention about those topics which built up a positive impression about you, which tells about your good conduct, your active participation in sports and extra- curricular activities. If you are given a free topic, try to choose one that is relevant with the program in which you want to enroll. If some general topic is given try to take some topic based on social issues and social welfare. You can take some topics of general awareness or environmental issues. Check your spelling and make sure that you use proper grammar. Use the Microsoft Word spell check and grammar check programs.

Our Process

Our Process

Essays are a critical component of the application form that confirms either your selection or rejection. So essays should be impressive as you are, it should truly be a replica your character and personality, as vibrant as you are as a person. So it is best that you write your own essays as only you can describe yourself best. Although writing essays is a hard task, at the beginning, but still we cannot write essays for you. If you think about it, you'll realize that we could do no better writing your essays, than you could writing ours. The way the questions are put in essay that only the applicant can answer them. The purpose of the essays is to enable the university to know you as a person. They are not just looking for your achievements (your resume covers that), but they want to know other facets of your personality. In short, the admission committee will form an opinion of you as a person without ever meeting you. Our job is to help you be creative and imaginative, choose the most appropriate content, bringing out what we believe is important to schools, providing constant feedback on your work-in-progress, and editing the drafts for grammar, style, and structure. To start, we will exchange little information understanding your strategy, discussing your strengths and weaknesses, your goals and what you wish to project. Once we clear this stage we will talk about what personal and professional traits should be emphasized on, you should start drafting experiences that highlight these qualities. Do not spend days refining an essay before sending it to us for the first time. We may end up trashing the whole idea if we don't feel it's a good reflection of your talents or experience that could add sufficient value to the program. (Remember, our first concern is a good strategy, not good writing skills.) Essays will often go back and forth several times before we mutually agree with the content and the message it projects. You should plan on a month long process with us. Use our application calendar to plan in advance. Please remember that good essays cannot be written overnight; essays can make or break your chances of getting into a good school.

Scholarship Assistance

Scholarship Assistance

Any hesitation about studying abroad is typically related to the cost. However, what most students don't know is that they can actually apply their current on-campus financial aid package to their study abroad trip in addition to scholarships. In fact, for some students, particularly those who pay out-of-state-tuition, studying abroad can sometimes be cheaper than a traditional on-campus semester. A study abroad scholarship is a monetary award for students to use toward the expenses of their program such as travel, course, credits, books and lodging. Students must apply for scholarships and some can be very competitive while others are underutilized. There are several types of study abroad scholarships to apply for such as

  • (1) Merit-based: These awards are based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. It's important to note that qualifications will vary based on the particular scholarship.
  • (2) Student-specific: These are scholarships for applicants who initially qualify based on factors such as gender, race, religion, family and medical history, or many other student-specific factors. Minority scholarships are the most common awards in this category, but qualifications will vary based on the particular scholarship.
  • (3) Destination-specific: These are scholarships awarded by a country to students planning to pursue a study abroad program in that particular country. They are awarded as an incentive to study in that country instead of elsewhere. Check with government-sponsored travel websites of the country where you wish to study to see what scholarships are available.
  • (4) Program-specific: Program-specific scholarships are offered by individual study abroad programs and/or the colleges and universities where they may be associated to qualified applicants. These scholarship are often given on the basis of academic and personal achievement, but qualifications will vary based on the particular scholarship. Check with your study abroad program and university to see what scholarships are available.
  • (5) Subject-specific:Subject-specific scholarships are awarded by study abroad programs or institutions to students based on their particular major or field of study. These scholarships may require the recipients to enroll in subject-specific courses while abroad or conduct subject-specific research while abroad, but it's important to note that qualifications will vary based on each scholarship.

Bank Loan Assistance

Bank Loan Assistance

A hike in tuition fee here, a hike in tuition fee there, and a hike in tuition fee everywhere! Every year as Unis around the globe increase their tuition fees, you can’t help but cringe — given our current exchange rate. But let that not demotivate you! When there are ways to overcome these obstacles and live your study abroad dream, why stop now? What you need to remember is that you are making a lifetime investment with your study abroad experience. So let’s have a look at how to make your dream a reality through the educational loan. Now, don’t go dismissing the idea of applying for an educational loan just because you nailed a scholarship. Sure, your hard-earned scholarship will come to your rescue but it will most definitely not cover the overall cost of your education abroad. So you most definitely will have to consider applying for an educational loan. We know you feel educational loans are complicated monsters, but we assure you they are nothing to be scared of. So wondering what kind of coverage the education loan will offer? It will basically cover your tuition fees, book and any supplies fees, room and board fees, transportation fees, health insurance fees, and also your living expenses. It should take care of all your education-related expenses. The bank won’t actually hand you the money but will generally credit it into the Uni’s account at the start of each year or semester as required. Interesting? Read on for more… To help you get started, we want to spell it all out for you — the basics of the educational loan… Once you receive the offer letter from your dream Uni, apply for an educational loan right away. To be able to do this, you must research your loan options thoroughly during the lull after you’re done with your Uni applications and are awaiting your offer letter anxiously. Make use of this in-between time period effectively. This is definitely not the time for you to take a break! Interest to Compare! As you run a research on loans from leading banks, you will find that they offer loans with varying rates of interest. We recommend you to take your time to compare the different kind of loans that are on offer and run a thorough comparison. A helpful tip: state-run banks have lower interest rates in comparison to private ones (if you didn’t know that already). Don’t set all your hopes on just one though — we think it’s best for you to apply to multiple banks, in case your loan application were to get rejected by one. Let’s have a quick look at study abroad loan details from some of our country’s top banks, shall we?

  • Bank of Baroda offers loans of up to Rs 20 lakhs with a rate of interest per annum of 12% for loans above Rs 4 lakhs.
  • Canara Bank offers up to Rs 20 lakhs with a rate of interest per annum of 12% for loans between Rs 4 and 7.5 lakhs and 9.5% for loans greater than Rs 7.5 lakhs.
  • Axis Bank offers up to Rs 20 lakhs and its rate of interest per annum ranges from 13.75% to 15.75%.
  • Credila (of the HDFC Bank Company) offers up to Rs 20 lakhs and its rate of interest per annum is 13.5%.
  • ICICI Bank offers up to Rs 20 lakhs and has an annual interest rate of 15%.
  • Indian Overseas Bank offers up to Rs 40 lakhs and charges an annual interest rate of 15%.
  • State Bank of India offers up to Rs 30 lakhs with an annual interest rate of 13.75% for amounts between Rs 4 – 7.5 lakhs and 11.75% for amounts above Rs 7.5 lakhs.
For more details, approach the bank or visit their website online. The current interest rates fall on an average between 11% to 14%; however most of these are offered on a floating rate basis. In other words, be prepared to face increased or decrease rates later. Be careful, you don’t want the bank to spring any last-minute surprises on you, so read through all related info with utmost care. Eligible? The first thing you should check as you begin to shortlist banks is the eligibility criteria. Most banks offer educational loans for long-term programs by reputed institutions. Short-term ones (such as English language programs) are usually not covered. For those planning to study vocational courses at a TAFE institution in Australia — educational loans don’t cover these either. So be well read, it really helps to know all the teeny weeny details here. Your Cosigner! In general, when your student loan exceeds Rs 5 lakhs, you will be required to have a cosigner. A cosigner is a person (mostly a parent) who has to sign the loan with you, agreeing to pay your debt, in case you fail to do so. Your cosigner will be on the hook for your debt and so this is a very big commitment and not to be taken lightly. Must-Know Loan Facts:
  • You will have to provide the bank, margin money for student loans exceeding Rs 4 lakhs which is usually 15% of the loan amount.
  • For student loans about Rs 7.5 lakhs, you will generally have to offer the bank an LIC policy or a few documents of immovable property in your name.
  • Be prepared for a slightly lower loan amount at the time of disbursement, as it may be affected by the exchange rate at the time of disbursement.
  • Your loan will have a moratorium period or holiday period, only after which you will be required to start with your EMIs. This period could last up to the duration of the course or up to the time period till you find employment and varies from bank to bank.
  • Completing your KYC or (Know Your Customer) is an important part of the loan-process.
  • This will help the loan-provider feel assured that the student has the ability to repay and that documents provided are accurate.
Be Ready! Get in contact with the bank and obtain a checklist from them beforehand to have all documents and papers ready and be prepared for application. Also check to see if the Uni has any tie-ups with banks for educational loans — if so, it could expedite the whole loan process. Your Application Check List: Run a check to see if you have these. You will be needing some of these listed below. Identity Proof:
  • Driving license
  • Passport
  • Pan card
  • Voter's identity card
  • A signed verification letter from a recognized public authority or public servant for your identity and residence.
  • Aadhar card
Address Proof:
  • Passport
  • Bank account statement
  • Ration card
  • Aadhar card
  • Voter’s ID card
  • Telephone bill/ water bill/ electricity bill
  • Allotment letter issued by a government department
Signature Proof:
  • The banker’s signature verification
  • Driving license
  • PAN card
  • Passport copy
Know Your Clause! We urge you to take your own time to really go through the loan agreement’s fine print before you sign it. Keep your eyes open — a few things you should be checking for include the interest structure, pre-payment details, or if there is any option for you to extend it in case you are unemployed after graduation. If you have any questions, you should get in touch with the bank advisor. Be clear of the whole loan process and understand its clauses. These are just a few facts you should be aware of, while approaching a bank for a loan. And that said, we hope you have a better picture of how to secure a loan. Do you? Share your comments and views with us! We would be happy to hear from you. And also, if you are looking for any other kind of assistance to get into your dream Uni, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We, at Hotcourses India, would love to be of help!

Mock Visa Interviews

Mock Visa Interviews

Obtaining a visa is the last and final step for a student planning to study abroad. If this fails, then all the other efforts end in vain. Gigeo of IMTP Consultancy feels that every student should study the visa procedure before starting the university application process. There is no guarantee that one can obtain a visa after completion of other necessary formalities. The visa officers will examine the student critically and will observe if the candidate can contribute towards the economy. He will also examine whether he/she has the capability to survive in the country. Very few countries conduct visa interviews. In countries like the UK the visa process is less complicated when compared to the United States. If one follows the steps systematically, then there is a 99.9% chance of clearing the visa procedure. The system in the United States is different. It is a country that rejects maximum number of visa applications every year. Around 20% to 30% of the students do not clear the visa process. During the visa interview the officer focuses on four factors. They are as follows:

  • Academic records and academic skills
  • A decent score for GRE/TOEFL/ IELTS/ SAT
  • Financial stability
  • The standard and ranking of the university into which the student gets admitted
It has been observed that around 80% of the students get rejected due to lack of funds. During the interview process, the officer looks at the capability and confidence level of the candidate.According to Gigeo, attending a mock interview before the actual interview could be useful to reduce tension and nervousness. The student is expected to know everything about the university which includes the way of life, food habits and the living standard of the country where the student plans to study.

Job Assistance

There's a wide variety of reasons why people would want to go abroad to study - to develop a stronger command of the English language, attend a potentially better quality course (and a correspondingly better degree) and the chance to make international contacts during your time at university that may be of use later down the line in your career. The main reason why many people choose to study abroad, however, is to open up job opportunities in some of the most prosperous countries in the world. Some destinations enjoy a better quality of life, and if you're not lucky enough to be born in such a place, then one of the ways to relocate is through a successful career. It's not rocket science - though that would certainly be one degree that would help. This article is designed to help anyone hoping to get a job when they've finished their degree in one of the 'big four' countries - Canada, the UK, the USA, and Australia ,Europe ,UAE, or so on .Each have their own rules as far as foreign graduates being able to work are concerned, and have varying degrees of strictness. We'll go over the rules for each in detail - have a read and see what you can find out. Remember, though - for all of these you are expected to study for a graduate degree from a university in one of these countries first; if you don't, then this article won't be much help to you.

Well look at the second priority. People really want to settle somewhere and continue working there. Even though second priority is not pointing out that students are basically aiming for the Green Card since many students also want to get international job experience through visa extension and then return to their home country and work there. Also this proves the reason the number of application in UK has reduced by almost 33% in a year, after the visa restriction was introduced. Students have only 4 months to look for job after completing their education and there you have the result: University of Manchester (a top tier university in the world in UK) is looking to fill up its international student's quota till June. UK's loss is gain for many countries. UK which is still the second preference for students for higher education has become less popular within a span of two years after visa rules were changed.
